Spring has arrived!

The kindergarten class at OLS has been busy celebrating the arrival of spring.  The first order of business was to wake up Midnight, the class bear that went into hibernation for the winter.  Last fall, all the kindergartners brought in their own stuffed animals, talked about hibernation, and bid farewell to Midnight for the winter months. Earlier this month it was time to wake up Midnight! Follow this link to hear their song and watch them wake the hibernating bear.

In addition to hibernation, the kindergartners learned about spring gardens.  After reading a book about gardens, each student made a spring garden collage out of recycled materials.

Pi day

We celebrate pi day on March 14 because March is the third month and the fourteenth day.

As you can see in the video, many digits of pi are displayed in the 7th classroom.  We had a contest to see who could recite the most digits of pi.  We learned that pi is the circumference divided by the diameter of a circle (3.14).  We read SIR CUMFERENCE AND THE FIRST ROUND TABLE(A Math Adventure).  We made up songs and poems related to pi.  And... we ate lots of pies that were brought in and shared.

Girl Scout Sunday

Last weekend, OLS celebrated Girl Scout Sunday during 10:00 Mass.

On Girl Scout Sunday, we recognized the outstanding contributions these girls make to our parish through their service and works of charity.  Our Girl Scout troops processed in with their flags at the beginning of Mass and sat with their families at the front of church.  Each girl brought a canned good to donate to our parish’s St. Vincent de Paul food pantry.

Student Reporter News: Mrs. Banahan Video

On Friday the whole school gathered in the gym and made a video for Mrs. Banahan. She is half way through her treatments and we wanted to send our love and prayers to her. Mrs. Mongan had the idea to sing “Living on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi and tell her we love and miss her and that we are praying for her. The whole school will continue to pray for her recovery and her return to school.--8th grader Faith K.

Student Reporter News: Freak the Mighty

At OLS, the teachers work hard to cultivate a love of learning and reading. The below 7th Grade report puts into practice their lesson on figurative language.

"We just finished once again another good book in Reading class. This book was called Freak the Mighty; it had imagery, metaphors, alliteration, and many more versions of figurative language. The book could drag you in as if it were an alligator dragging a deer into the water. You just went deeper in. I appreciate being able to read all the wonderful books with Mrs. Ryan because they are fun.--7th" grader Halie M.

Student Reporter News: Band Performance

On Sunday the twenty-first of February, the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade concert band members went to Bishop DuBourg High School.  Our new band director, Mr. Litvin, said that we did an excellent job. We were critiqued on our ability to keep the speed just right, our balance of sound, and our technique. The Our Lady of Sorrows Band performed three pieces. There were judicators; one, a former middle school band director herself, and the judicators would give us constructive criticism on what they thought needed to be worked on. There were three other bands there and together we played Thunder Bay March, a very active and lively piece in which we had to start over on because everyone started out on the same notes, but got all crazy because we went at different speeds.--8th grader Kaitlyn W.

Mrs. Huelsing's 2nd graders are eager readers! They enjoy finding a cozy spot in the classroom to do their reading assignments. Sometimes their pair up with a buddy and take turns reading to each other.

The 2nd graders complete book reports each month. Here we see the Arthur book reports they created in February.

Pinewood Derby

The Cub Scouts of Pack 51 hosted their annual pinewood derby last week.  Each scout designed, created, and decorated a car and had a chance to tell all derby attendees about his design process.

Then they were off to the races!  Each car participated in several heats, and the crowd loved watching the speedy races.  Fast or slow, all the boys were proud of their designs.

February in preschool

February was a season of celebrations in Preschool!  The Blue Room (whose art is featured here) observed Black History Month, Mardi Gras, and Valentine's Day.

Other classes celebrated Super Bowl, Chinese New Year, and Leap Day too!  The Yellow Room marked their 100th day of school.  We all started our very important Lenten journey by attending Mass on Ash Wednesday with our fourth grade buddies.  So much to celebrate in one short month!
