In the spirit of Mother Teresa, Mrs. Mongan and her first graders visit the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel about twice per week. They pray for the sick and the poor.

Preschool Emotions

Social-emotional development is one of the most important aspects of early childhood education. Teachers at One LIttle Seed start every year by helping their students grow a "feeling vocabulary". The Blue Room (made up of 4- and 5-year-olds) read several books about feelings, discussed how to handle angry feelings, and talked about things that make them feel happy!

Learning to express feelings is not a one-week or one-month lesson but a year-long process that will serve these little ones their entire lives!

Seats and Feet Drive

Over the last two weeks, the Home & School Association invited OLS families to participate in a drive to support families who lost everything during the recent floods in Louisiana. Our students brought in bag after bag of new socks, new underwear, and new shoes to help provide some basics for students at another Catholic school: St. Thomas More in Baton Rouge.

While we had hoped we could send something to these families in need, we were absolutely floored by the tremendous response! OLS proves once again that our community's generosity knows no limit. By the numbers, we collected:

• 26 pairs of shoes
• 445 pairs of underwear
• 390 pairs of socks
• 8 undershirts
• 45 letters from our students to theirs

We filled 9 boxes and shipped them out last week. Thank you for your support and concern for the families at St. Thomas More!

Third grade botanists

Ms. Schweiss's third grade students are exploring topics in science this quarter. They've begun learning about living organisms and have worked to define their characteristics. To put their lesson into practice, they planted their own seeds. The students make regular observations of their plants, noting how they respond to their environment.

Rolling to School

How do you commute to school? OLS families find a range of ways to get to campus. While the vehicle drop off lane is always a popular choice, you'll find OLS kids walking, biking, or riding their scooters through the neighborhood on their way to school. Our dedicated crossing guards are there rain or shine to ensure both pedestrian and vehicle safety.

Theme for 2016-2017

For 2016-17, the theme is “God's Love is Eternal” (Psalms 136:12).   Each year, the 8^th grade class selects a theme for the academic term. 

A generous parishioner, Linda Carter, designed and created a banner, which bears the theme and hangs in a central hallway for all to see. Banners from past years line the cafeteria, reminding students of our history and tradition.

Blue Day

Last week, 4th grader Aiden G organized a fundraiser to support prostate cancer research. After losing his dad to this disease, the cause is near to his heart. Aiden encouraged all students to bring $1 to school and wear a blue shirt of their choice. Each student who made a donation received a cupcake, too.

With the support of the OLS student body, Aiden exceeded his fundraising goal! Thanks to all for your generous support.

TBT: 6th Grade Biography Reports

Now that our students and faculty have settled in a bit, we hope to resume our regular posting schedule soon. In the meantime, however, we have a few things to share from last school year.

Last spring, Mrs. McGrath's 6th graders each chose a biography to read and gave a presentation on their subject to their classmates. Biography subjects were varied and creative: Mother Teresa, Jackie Robinson, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., President Obama, Marie Curie, Malala, Walt Disney, J.K. Rowling, Wilma Rudolph, Helen Keller, Amelia Earhart, and Pocahontas.

The students enjoyed reading about their own subject and then learning from their classmates, as well. More than a few were surprised by how much fun they had with this assignment!

Celebrating St. Teresa

The students of OLS are dedicating this year to help continue the work of our newest saint: St. Teresa of Calcutta. In the spirit of Mother Teresa, our students will:

• visit senior citizens and pray with them
• read to younger students
• have "simple food" days
• collect money and items for the poor
• spend time in our adoration chapel for quiet prayer and reflection
